In Rome, Johann Wilhelm Baur painted watercolours of architectural follies, and he was often hired to make pictures of gardens. Houbraken writes that he first learned to draw and paint with the miniaturist Friedrich Brentel in Strasbourg, where Baur was born in 1607. He talked while he concentrated and was known to hold conversations with objects. He's famous for his illustrations of Ovid's Metamorphoses, and Melchior Küsel of Augsburg engraved many of his drawings. He died of a sudden illness in Vienna in 1640 while working on a commission for Emperor Ferdinand III. Browse 119 works by Johann Wilhelm Baur from 6 museums, free to download in HD.
