Johan Braakensiek left school at 11 and took a job designing and embroidering in a fashion shop. At the same time he went to art classes, where the critic Martin Klaff noticed his drawings and told him to sit the entrance exam for the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam. He graduated in 1881 and spent most of his career drawing for publishers. His break came in 1886, when the magazine De Amsterdammer made him its political cartoonist. Dutch readers still know his pictures from books like Van Allerlei Slag and Uit het leven van Dik Trom. Browse 405 works by Johan Braakensiek from 2 museums, free to download in HD.
