Monet credited Jongkind with the "definitive education" of his own eye. Born in Lattrop in the Netherlands, Jongkind trained in The Hague and moved to Paris in 1846. From 1862 he travelled regularly to Normandy, where he became friends with Eugène Boudin and got to know Monet and Frédéric Bazille. He painted watercolours out of doors and used them as sketches for oil paintings made in his studio. He was invited to the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874, but he declined.
