Jean-Jacques de Boissieu made his prints in Lyon, the city where he was born in 1736. He studied at the École Gratuite de Dessin there but was mostly self-taught. He later went to Italy with the ambassador Louis Alexandre, Duc de la Rochefoucauld d'Enville, and met Voltaire on the way. He came home with a collection of landscape drawings and etched the Roman and Dutch countryside as well as the land around Lyon. His prints earned him a reputation as the last representative of the older etching tradition, and he died in Lyon in 1810.
