Millet grew up on a farm in Gruchy in Normandy and had to help his father mow, plough and sow. Those same jobs kept coming back in his paintings of peasant farmers. In June 1849 he settled in the village of Barbizon with Catherine Lemaire and their children. In the years after, he painted The Sower, The Gleaners and The Angelus, and he became one of the founders of the Barbizon school. He died in Barbizon in 1875, and Van Gogh later looked to his work, especially in his early years. Browse 211 works by Jean-François Millet from 40 museums, free to download in HD. Source: Wikipedia
