Greuze wanted the Academy to receive him as a history painter, but in 1769 it took him in only as a genre painter. The Director called his new history picture unworthy of the Academy and of Greuze himself. Greuze quarrelled with his colleagues and stopped exhibiting until 1804. Born in Tournus in Burgundy, he had followed the portrait painter Grandon to Lyon and then to Paris. He painted portraits and genre scenes, and he died in the Louvre in great poverty in 1805.
