Crenshaw writes that Jan van Goyen's landscapes rarely fetched high prices, so he painted thinly and quickly with cheap pigments. The son of a shoemaker, he was born in Leiden in 1596 and studied in Haarlem with Esaias van de Velde. At 35 he set up a permanent studio in The Hague. He also dealt in art and speculated in tulips and property, and he died there in 1656 still 18,000 guilders in debt. He left about twelve hundred paintings and more than a thousand drawings.
