Jan Saenredam grew up as an orphan, and his uncle first sent him to learn basket weaving. A lawyer persuaded his guardian to let him draw, so he trained with Hendrick Goltzius in Haarlem and became a master there in 1589. Rivalry in that workshop sent him to Amsterdam for two years, and he then set up his own workshop in Assendelft. He made over 170 engraved plates of allegorical, mythological and biblical subjects before he died of typhus in 1607. His son was Pieter Jansz Saenredam, who painted church interiors.
