After lightning burned a church in Antwerp, Jan Punt engraved and published sketches of the ceiling paintings that were lost. The Sint-Carolus Borromeuskerk lost its 39 ceiling pieces by Rubens in that fire on 18 July 1718. Jan de Wit had sketched them before the fire. Punt was born in Amsterdam in 1711 and trained under Jacob de Wit and A. van der Laan. He also engraved book illustrations, bibles and historic prints, and his pupils included Reinier Vinkeles and Marten Corver. He died in Amsterdam in 1779.
