Jan Luyken learned engraving from his father Kaspar in Amsterdam, the city where he was born and died. He was a child prodigy and married at 19. At 26 he joined the Mennonite church, and that choice led him to write moralistic poetry. In 1685 he made 104 copper etchings for an edition of the Martyrs Mirror, and thirty of those plates survive. He later published Het Menselyk Bedryf in 1694, a book of engravings of 17th-century trades made with his son Caspar. Browse 1,641 works by Jan Luyken from 8 museums, free to download in HD.
