By 1638 Jan Both and his brother Andries were in Rome. Andries painted genre works there, while Jan painted landscapes in the manner of Claude Lorrain. Born in Utrecht, Jan first learned to paint from his father, according to Houbraken. Andries died in Venice as the brothers were returning home, and Jan was back in Utrecht by 1646. There he painted wide, imaginary landscapes drenched in a golden Mediterranean light, and he died in the city in 1652. Browse 117 works by Jan Both from 37 museums, free to download in HD.
