Jakob Alt left Frankfurt am Main, where he was born and first trained, and moved to Vienna to study at the Academy. He painted landscapes on trips through Austria and Italy, with many views along the Danube and in Vienna itself. From 1830 he and his eldest son Rudolf von Alt painted about 170 of the 300 views of the Empire made for the future Emperor Ferdinand I.
