Jacob Matham of Haarlem learned his trade from his stepfather, the painter and draftsman Hendrik Goltzius. He worked as an engraver and pen-draftsman and made a series of prints after the work of Pieter Aertsen. Starting in 1611 he spent about four years engraving paintings by Peter Paul Rubens. In 1613 the engraver Jan van de Velde came to him as an apprentice. Matham married Marijtgen, sister of the engraver Simon van Poelenburgh, and his son Adriaen became a notable engraver in his own right.
