Jacob Houbraken

Born in Dordrecht, Jacobus Houbraken learned engraving from his father Arnold. In 1707 he moved to Amsterdam, where he spent years helping his father with The Great Theatre of Dutch Painters. He worked almost entirely on portraits and made more than 400 portrait engravings. His heads for Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain came out in parts in London from 1743. Under many portraits he added small notes about the original oil painting, and today some of his prints are the only likenesses left of their sitters.
