Hugo Simberg painted mostly macabre and supernatural subjects, and devils turn up again and again in his titles. In 1895 his aunt Alexandra sent him a newspaper clipping about symbolism, and he became a private pupil of Akseli Gallen-Kallela at Ruovesi. In the autumn of 1902 he fell ill with meningitis and spent much of the winter in bed. After he recovered he painted The Wounded Angel, which was voted Finland's "national painting" in a public vote organized by Ateneum in 2006. Simberg was born in Hamina and died in Ähtäri at 44.
