Hieronymus Wierix started engraving at 11, and a year later he was making excellent copies after Albrecht Dürer. He was born in Antwerp, the son of Anton Wierix I, and is believed to have trained with a goldsmith. From 1577 he worked as an independent master and made many allegorical and political prints for Willem van Haecht the Elder and Godevaard van Haecht. He also made many small devotional prints and copied designs by Maerten de Vos. He published about 650 of his own prints, far more than his brothers Jan and Anton II.
