about 1629-1643
In Rome, Herman van Swanevelt painted idyllic landscapes with sunlit contre-jours that follow the times of day. He came from Woerden and moved to Rome in 1629, where the Barberini family and Pope Urban VIII gave him commissions. He also painted landscapes for Philip IV of Spain's new Buen Retiro Palace in Madrid. In 1641 he went back to Paris and stayed there, apart from occasional visits to Woerden. He joined the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1651 and helped decorate the Hôtel Lambert. Browse 215 works by Herman van Swanevelt from 19 museums, free to download in HD.
