Matisse studied law in Paris and first started to paint in 1889, after his mother brought him art supplies while he recovered from appendicitis. He later called it "a kind of paradise," and his father was deeply disappointed. At the Salon d'Automne in 1905 his wild, often dissonant colours led the critic Louis Vauxcelles to a remark that gave the Fauves their name. He moved to a suburb of Nice and later to Vence. After cancer surgery in 1941 left him reliant on a wheelchair, he cut shapes from paper painted with gouache by his assistants, and the cut-out became his main medium in the last decade of his life.
