At the Moulin Rouge
1892-95
817 works
When the Moulin Rouge cabaret opened in Paris in 1889, Toulouse-Lautrec was asked to make a series of posters for it.
The cabaret kept a seat for him and showed his paintings. He had come to Montmartre to study, and he rarely left the area over the next 20 years. Born into an aristocratic family in Albi, he broke both legs as a teenager, and the breaks never healed properly. He died in 1901 at 36, after a career of less than 20 years that left 737 paintings and more than 5,000 drawings.
