Hendrick Hondius

In 1597 Hendrik Hondius settled in The Hague and registered with the local artists' guild. Born in Duffel, he had been apprenticed to a goldsmith in Brussels and studied drawing with the engraver Jan Wierix. His first print privilege was for a portrait of Prince Maurits, and he later turned more to publishing maps, books about fortifications and official portraits. One of his most important books, from 1610, collected 69 portraits of mainly Netherlandish artists. In 1620 he bought his own printing press, and his sons Willem and Hendrik carried on the business.
