At four, Helene Schjerfbeck fell down some stairs and hurt her hip, and she walked with a limp for the rest of her life. She started at the Finnish Art Society School of Drawing at eleven and later studied in Paris and painted in Brittany and St Ives. Her painting The Convalescent won a bronze medal at the 1889 Paris World Fair. In 1902 she moved with her mother to Hyvinkää, where she spent two decades cut off from the Helsinki art world and became a modernist painter. She spent her last years painting self-portraits at a spa hotel in Saltsjöbaden, Sweden, and died there in 1946. Browse 133 works by Helene Schjerfbeck from 11 museums, free to download in HD.
