Heinrich Aldegrever

390 works

Heinrich Aldegrever's real name was Trippenmecker, which means a clog-maker in Westphalian dialect.

Born in Paderborn, he moved to Soest around 1525 and painted the wings and predella of the Mary altar for the church of St. Peter. His first engravings appeared in 1527, signed with an AG monogram that closely resembled Albrecht Dürer's. He became a Lutheran in 1531 and, short of church commissions, spent most of his time on portraits and prints. He made some 290 engravings and woodcuts, and about a third of his prints were ornamental engravings that artists and craftsmen used as models well into the seventeenth century.
