Hans Baldung probably got the nickname Grien in Albrecht Dürer's Nuremberg workshop, thanks to a liking for the colour green. He worked there from 1503 and seems to have run the shop while Dürer was in Venice. In 1509 he settled in Strasbourg as a citizen and opened his own workshop. He worked in many media, from woodcuts to stained glass, and he was the first German artist to bring witches heavily into his art. His eleven-panel altarpiece for Freiburg Cathedral shows scenes from the life of the Virgin and is still intact today. Browse 261 works by Hans Baldung Grien from 25 museums, free to download in HD.
