Gustav Klimt

Around 1900, Klimt's ceiling paintings for the University of Vienna were called pornographic, and he never took a public commission again. He was born near Vienna in 1862, the son of a gold engraver, and started out painting murals and ceilings in public buildings. He helped found the Vienna Secession and became its first president. His "golden phase" brought paintings with gold leaf, including The Kiss and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I.
