Grant Wood painted in the hayloft of a carriage house in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and called the studio 5 Turner Alley. The place had no address until he made one up. He also taught junior high art in Cedar Rapids and made four trips to Europe, where Jan van Eyck's work led him to paint with more clarity. In 1930 American Gothic won a $300 prize at the Art Institute of Chicago and made news across the country. His sister Nan and his dentist, Byron McKeeby, posed for the farmer and his daughter.
