Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione

156 works

Around 1648, Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione invented the monotype, the only printmaking technique to be an Italian invention.

Born in Genoa, he spent over ten years in Rome and later became a court artist in Mantua for Duke Carlo II. He painted portraits and landscapes but came to prefer rural scenes with more animals than people, and Noah's Ark was a favourite subject. The Queen's Gallery in London called him a violent and impetuous man who was repeatedly in court for assault. Much of what is known about him comes from court documents.
