Tiepolo spent three years in Würzburg painting ceilings in the prince-bishop's palace. Over the great entrance staircase he made a huge fresco of Apollo and the four continents, and he put his own face in it. Born in Venice in 1696, he trained with Gregorio Lazzarini and later worked alongside his sons Giandomenico and Lorenzo. In 1761 King Charles III of Spain asked him to paint the throne room ceiling of the Royal Palace of Madrid. He died in Madrid nine years later.
