Seurat spent two years on A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, and much of that time he was in the park sketching. He was born in Paris in 1859 and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts under Henri Lehmann. The Salon rejected his first major painting, Bathers at Asnières, so he showed it with the Indépendants in 1884. He built his pictures from tiny dots of colour that the eye blends on its own, a technique he devised called pointillism. He died in Paris at 31, and nobody is sure what killed him.
