George Hendrik Breitner

When Amsterdam's streets turn grey and rainy, locals still say "Echt Breitnerweer", Breitner weather. George Hendrik Breitner was born in Rotterdam in 1857 and studied at the art academy in The Hague. There he sketched the poorer districts with Vincent van Gogh, though neither man thought much of the other's work. By 1890 he was also using a camera to study movement and light in the city.
