George Bellows turned down an offer from an Indianapolis baseball scout and enrolled at Ohio State University instead. He left in 1904, just before he was to graduate, and moved to New York City to study art under Robert Henri. His New York paintings show working-class neighbourhoods, the city under snow and amateur boxing matches. He also painted over 250 scenes of the sea and made more than a hundred lithographs with the master printer Bolton Brown. He died in New York City in 1925 at 42, after failing to tend to a ruptured appendix. Browse 130 works by George Bellows from 42 museums, free to download in HD. Source: Wikipedia
