At 11 Northampton Square in Clerkenwell, London, George Baxter had his home and workshop for sixteen years. Born in Lewes to a printer father, he started experimenting with colour printing in 1828. The patent he got in 1835 joined an engraved metal plate with relief blocks, sometimes in up to 24 colours. His prints were popular, but the process was slow and his business was never profitable. He was declared bankrupt in 1865 and died two years later after an accident involving a horse omnibus. Browse 294 works by George Baxter from 5 museums, free to download in HD.
