In 1568 the Duke of Alba banned Frans Hogenberg from Antwerp for being a Protestant and printing engravings that sympathized with the Beeldenstorm. Born in Mechelen in Flanders, he spent a few years in London and then moved to Cologne, where he died. He made portraits and topographical views as well as historical allegories and scenes of events from his own time. With Georg Braun and his son Abraham, he worked on the Civitates Orbis Terrarum. He engraved most of the maps in its six volumes of town plans and views. Browse 506 works by Frans Hogenberg from 5 museums, free to download in HD.
