Boucher's first teacher was his father, the Paris painter Nicolas Boucher. He won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1720, but money problems at the Académie delayed his study in Italy by five years. Back in Paris he painted myths and pastoral scenes, and he often used his own wife and children as models for family scenes. He also designed theatre costumes and sets, and six series of hangings for the Beauvais workshops. He became First Painter of the King in 1765 and died in his native Paris five years later.
