Francis Seymour Haden

Francis Seymour Haden went to no art school and had no teachers. A surgeon by training, he studied the prints of Dürer, Lucas van Leyden and Rembrandt at a dealer's shop in Bunhill Row, London. He liked to work straight onto the plate in front of the subject, and he etched Sunset in Ireland on the spot at Dundrum Park in Tipperary. In 1880 he became the first president of the Society of Painter-Etchers, which he ran for thirty years. He was knighted in 1894 for his services to original etching and engraving.
