In London, Francesco Bartolozzi made his name with stipple engraving, where an image is built from delicate dots instead of lines. Born in Florence in 1727, he studied engraving in Venice before he took the post of Engraver to King George III in London. The Royal Academy's rules excluded engravers, so he joined as a founding member in the category of Painter. He often printed in red, orange and brown inks. In his seventies he moved to Lisbon to direct the National Academy, and he died there in 1815 after debts forced him to sell most of his prints.
