In 1436, Fra Angelico moved with other friars from Fiesole to the new convent of San Marco in Florence. There he painted frescoes for the cells, each one matching the size and shape of the window beside it. Vasari says Cosimo de' Medici asked him to decorate the convent, and Cosimo kept a cell there for himself. He was born Guido di Pietro in Vicchio near Fiesole and took the name Fra Giovanni when he joined the Dominicans. He later worked in Rome for Popes Eugene IV and Nicholas V and died there in 1455.
