Portrait of Meryon
1853
Born in Paris, Félix Bracquemond trained as a trade lithographer before he turned to etching around 1853. He made over eight hundred plates, many of them portraits or bird studies. In 1856 he found Hokusai's Manga in his printer's workshop, where the prints had been used as packing for porcelain. Their birds and fish ended up on a table service he designed for Eugène Rousseau, first shown at the Universal Exhibition of 1867. On his advice, Manet and Degas began to practise engraving.
