Kirchner's first studio in Dresden had been a butcher's shop, and that's where the Brücke group first met. He founded the group in 1905 with Fritz Bleyl, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Erich Heckel. He later painted a series of street scenes in Berlin, but he had a breakdown during his army service in the First World War and was discharged. From 1917 he lived in Davos in Switzerland, where he painted the local farmers and the mountain landscapes. The Nazis branded his work degenerate in 1937, and he died at his home in Frauenkirch the following year. Browse 422 works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner from 51 museums, free to download in HD.
