Vuillard's mother ran a sewing workshop in Paris, and he painted a series of seamstresses based on it. For about ten years he was one of Les Nabis, a group whose paintings assembled areas of pure color. In his interiors the faces are rarely detailed, and the figures almost disappear into the wallpaper and carpets. After the group broke up in 1900, he moved to a more realistic style with more light and color. From 1920 he mostly painted portraits of Parisians in their homes and studios, and he kept working until his death at La Baule.
