Coornhert became a copper engraver in Haarlem and made prints with Maarten van Heemskerck, who drew the designs. Their prints became popular, and Karel van Mander later noted one series in his Schilderboeck. Coornhert was born in Amsterdam, the son of a cloth merchant, and his father disinherited him in 1539 over his marriage. He also translated Cicero, Seneca and Boethius into Dutch and wrote in favour of tolerance. The RKD lists Hendrick Goltzius, Philip Galle and Cornelis Cort as his pupils.
