Auguste Raffet was apprenticed to a wood turner in Paris and took art classes in the evenings. At 18 he decorated china in Cabanel's workshop, where Rudor taught him lithography. His reputation came in 1830 with designs drawn on stone, among them Waterloo and Les adieux de la garrison. His chief works are lithographs of the Napoleonic campaigns, and he illustrated about forty-five books. He saw the siege of Rome and made lithographs of it, and he died at Genoa in 1860.
