Teniers learned to paint from his father in Antwerp and copied old masters to help with the family's money troubles. In 1637 he married Anna Brueghel, a daughter of Jan Brueghel the Elder, and Rubens was a witness at the wedding. Around 1650 he moved to Brussels as court painter to Archduke Leopold Wilhelm and keeper of his art gallery. He's known mostly for his peasant and tavern scenes, and about two thousand paintings are thought to be his. He died in Brussels in 1690.
