Claes Janszoon Visscher II put a small fisherman in his maps, usually somewhere near water. It was his trademark, because he often published under the Latinized name Piscator. Born in Amsterdam in 1587, he lived there all his life and learned etching and printing from his father. He etched more than 200 plates and also published prints by Esaias van de Velde and David Vinckboons. His son and grandson became mapmakers too, and the business stayed in the family until it was sold to Peter Schenk. Browse 374 works by Claes Jansz. Visscher from 5 museums, free to download in HD.
