In the autumn of 1887 in Paris, Childe Hassam switched to softer colors and freer brushwork, much like the French Impressionists. Born in Boston in 1859, he started out making designs for commercial engravings and illustrating children's stories for magazines. Back in New York, he painted well-dressed crowds and horse-drawn cabs on Fifth Avenue. In 1916 a war preparedness parade inspired his Flag series, about thirty paintings of flags on that street. He made thousands of works and died in East Hampton, New York, at age 75. Browse 132 works by Childe Hassam from 32 museums, free to download in HD.
