Charles Rochussen

Charles Rochussen worked in an office for a few years before deciding, at the age of 22, to turn to painting. In 1837 he enrolled at the academy in The Hague, where Wijnand Nuijen and later Anthonie Waldorp taught him. In his Hague years he painted landscapes and beach and village views. He moved to Amsterdam in 1849, lived there for twenty years and then settled in Rotterdam. Later he started painting in a looser way, closer to the coming Impressionism.
