Colour blindness ruled out painting for Charles Meryon, so by 1848 he had settled on etching. Before that he spent ten years in the French navy, including a four-year voyage around the world based mostly in New Zealand. His best years came in the first half of the 1850s, when he etched a series of dark, Gothic views of Paris. Some of the old buildings he drew were about to be pulled down as Napoleon III rebuilt the city with wide boulevards. Mental illness slowed his work, and he died in the Charenton asylum in 1868.
