Charles Jacque first learned to engrave maps during seven years in the French Army. In 1849 he fled the cholera epidemics in Paris and moved to Barbizon with Jean-François Millet. There he painted shepherds, flocks of sheep, pigs and scenes of farm life. He was just as famous for his etchings and engravings, and he is credited with reviving seventeenth-century techniques along with Félix Bracquemond and Felix Buhot. Charles Baudelaire wrote that all Jacque did on copper was filled with a freedom and a frankness that recalled the Old Masters.
