On trips to the Baltic coast, Bohemia and the Harz Mountains, Caspar David Friedrich drew his landscapes almost entirely in pencil. The mist and light in his paintings were done later, from memory. He was born in Greifswald on the Baltic Sea and settled in Dresden in 1798 after studying in Copenhagen. His figures are often seen from behind as they look out at night skies, morning mists or Gothic ruins. He died in Dresden in 1840, and other artists barely noticed his death.
