Caravaggio

Caravaggio worked fast from live models and painted straight onto the canvas without drawings. Born in Milan in 1571, he trained there under Simone Peterzano. In Rome, his two Saint Matthew paintings for San Luigi dei Francesi were an immediate sensation in 1600. In 1606 he killed Ranuccio Tomassoni and fled Rome under a death sentence. He spent his last years in exile, first in Naples and then in Malta, and died under uncertain circumstances on his way from Naples to Rome.
