Canaletto began in the theatre, designing opera sets and painting scenery with his father, Bernardo Canal, in Rome. Back in Venice he turned to city views, and much of his early work was painted "from nature" instead of in the studio. Many of his pictures went to Englishmen on the Grand Tour, later through the banker Joseph Smith, who became his main agent. In 1746 he moved to London to be closer to his market and painted the new Westminster Bridge and his patrons' houses. He went back to Venice and kept painting until his death in 1768.
